Wuuff & Meow partner Suvarna Raj is one of India's most decorated and most influential para-athletes — and one of the country's most important voices on disability rights. She has represented India at three Asian Para Games and at World Para Athletics, returning home with medals and a reputation for shattering stereotypes wherever she competes. Off the field, her work is just as defining. In 2024 she became the first woman with a disability to win the UN SDG Action Award, recognised as a Changemaker for advancing inclusion. She has conducted access audits across India under the Accessible India Campaign, helping make public spaces, transport and institutions usable for the people who need them most. Her fingerprints are on disability laws and policy that touch millions.

A polio survivor and lifelong wheelchair user, Suvarna has spent every chapter of her life refusing to be limited by other people's imaginations — and clearing the road for the next person coming up behind her.

Through every campaign, every audit, every long flight home from another international meet, Suvarna comes home to the same waiting heart — her dog, Tubby. "Every fight I take on outside, Tubby reminds me what I'm fighting for at home," she says.

Suvarna sat down with the Wuuff & Meow team to share her journey, her advocacy, and her bond with Tubby.

You've competed at three Asian Para Games and at World Para Athletics. What does representing India mean to you?

"Wearing the India jersey is not just an honour — it is a responsibility. When you compete on an international stage, you are not just running your own race. You are running for every parent back home who was told their child cannot. Every medal I have won is a quiet answer to that word. And every time I come back, I know my real work is just beginning — because medals matter, but the systems that allow more of us to chase them matter even more."

You've moved beyond competing — into policy, access audits, and advocacy at the highest level. What drives that work?

"I have spent my whole life navigating a country that wasn't built for me — pavements I couldn't use, buses I couldn't board, polling booths I couldn't enter. At some point you stop just managing those barriers and start removing them. The Accessible India Campaign audits, the work on accessible elections, the policy conversations — that's not separate from being an athlete. It's the same fight, just on different ground. Sports gave me a voice. Advocacy is how I use it."

What did the UN SDG Action Award mean to you?

"To be the first woman with a disability to win the SDG Action Award as a Changemaker — that recognition is not mine alone. It belongs to every disability rights worker, every parent, every athlete, every quiet hero in India who has been doing this work for decades without applause. I just got to stand up and accept it on their behalf. The work continues tomorrow morning."

Tell us about Tubby.

After a long day of fighting battles that don't always have an answer, I come back and he is waiting at the door. No medals matter to him. No policy wins matter to him. He just wants me.
